Before you start creating your automated rule, it is recommend that you draft the type of the rule you wish to setup to ensure a smooth set up. There are 2 kinds of rules you can create: Parsing and Cleansing.
Rule Type | Purpose | Example Use Case(s) |
Extracts data from a source field, based on a element position in naming convention (positional) or prefix (dynamic) to populating one or more destination classifications. | Extracting Brand and Product Category from a campaign naming convention.
Exacting device types based on the prefix "DT-" from placement data. | |
A predefined operation to identify and classify a field based on a combination of match condition. | Ensuring all ad campaigns integrated from LinkedIn are all classified as "Social". |
When you're ready, go to the Automated Rules section in Media Planner, click the + sign to start the process.
How do I create a Parsing Rule?
Define the dataset that the rule will run on. Here, you'll need to filter for and include:
Any fields you need to filter for the dataset you want to run the rule on.
Source field to extract the data from.
Reference field(s) for the match criteria configuration.
Destination field to classify.
To start defining the rule, click on the clear ruler icon in the source field to start the configuration wizard for Parsing Rules and give your rule a meaningful name and description for your rule. Input the separator element and choose the parse type:
Positional Parsing: Parse based on element position in naming convention.
Dynamic Parsing: Parse based on prefix.
Configure the destination fields and default values (when no parse element is found) for each element. A preview will load as you configure.
Once the configuration is done, you can save the rule to either run immediately, or during the next cycle.
How do I create a Cleansing Rule?
Define the dataset that the rule will run on. Here, you'll need to filter for and include:
Any fields you need to filter for the dataset you want to run the rule on.
Reference field(s) for the match criteria configuration.
Destination field to classify.
To start defining the rule, click on the black ruler icon in the source field to start the configuration wizard for Cleansing Rules.
Giving the rule a meaningful name and description for your rule. You can select whether a rule should run daily, or only on ad-hoc.
Configure the match condition using different combinations of logic and the final cleansed value for any matched data.
Once the configuration is done, you can save the rule to either run immediately, or during the next cycle.
What is the Automated Rules Detail Page?
The automated rules details page shows you the dataset and stats of the rule after executing.
Total Rows in Dataset: Number of rows in the filtered dataset.
Modified Rules in Last Run: Number of rows that matched the criteria and has been modified based on the rule.
Data Status: Lifetime cumulative percentage of rows modified by the rule based on the data set.
